How the Knitting Row Counter Works
The Knitting Row Counter tracks the total rows knitted and the current row inside a pattern repeat, so both numbers update with one tap.
- Set the repeat length: Enter the rows in the pattern repeat, such as 8 for a cable.
- Tap at each row end: Tap after finishing each row or round.
- Read 2 counts: The display shows total rows and the row number inside the repeat.
- Track repeats: The tool shows how many full repeats are done.
Knitting Row Counter Formula
The Knitting Row Counter repeat row equals the total rows modulo the repeat length, plus 1. Full repeats equal total rows divided by the repeat length, rounded down.
- Total rows
- Rows finished so far
- Repeat
- Rows in the pattern repeat
Example: A cable repeat is 8 rows. After 45 rows, repeats done = 5, and the next row is row (45 mod 8) + 1 = 6 of the repeat.

The Knitting Row Counter conversion table converts total rows into repeat positions for common repeat lengths.
| Total rows done | 4-row repeat | 6-row repeat | 8-row repeat | 12-row repeat |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10 | 2 done, next row 3 | 1 done, next row 5 | 1 done, next row 3 | 0 done, next row 11 |
| 24 | 6 done, next row 1 | 4 done, next row 1 | 3 done, next row 1 | 2 done, next row 1 |
| 37 | 9 done, next row 2 | 6 done, next row 2 | 4 done, next row 6 | 3 done, next row 2 |
| 50 | 12 done, next row 3 | 8 done, next row 3 | 6 done, next row 3 | 4 done, next row 3 |
About the Knitting Row Counter
A Knitting Row Counter is a dual counter that tracks total rows and the position within a repeating stitch pattern. The tool replaces the barrel counter that slides onto a knitting needle.
Lace, cable and colorwork patterns repeat over a fixed number of rows. Losing the place in a repeat leads to ripped-back work, which a dual counter prevents.
Ways to Use the Knitting Row Counter
The Knitting Row Counter has 5 main uses, including cable patterns and sock heels.
- Cable patterns: Track the crossing row in each repeat.
- Sock heels: Count heel-flap rows and gusset decreases.
- Lace charts: Track the current chart row.
- Sweater sleeves: Count rows between decreases.
- Ribbing: Count rows to reach the ribbing length.
