How the Crochet Row Counter Works

The Crochet Row Counter adds 1 each time you finish a row or round and shows progress toward the total rows in the pattern. Notes can be attached to specific rows.

  1. Enter total rows: Type the number of rows the pattern needs.
  2. Tap at each row end: Tap after turning your work or closing a round.
  3. Add row notes: Attach notes such as Change color at row 18.
  4. Read the length: The tool estimates the finished length from your row gauge.

Crochet Row Counter Formula

The Crochet Row Counter rows needed equal the target length multiplied by row gauge. Row gauge equals rows per 10 cm (4 in) from a swatch.

Rows needed = Target length ÷ 10 cm × Row gauge
Target length
Desired length of the piece
Row gauge
Rows per 10 cm (4 in)

Example: A scarf should be 150 cm (59 in) long. The swatch shows 12 rows per 10 cm. Rows needed = 150 ÷ 10 × 12 = 180 rows.

About the Crochet Row Counter

A Crochet Row Counter is a row tally for crochet projects that tracks rows completed against the pattern's total.

Row gauge differs by stitch: single crochet rows are short, and double crochet rows are about 3 chains tall. Measuring a swatch first gives the correct number of rows for a target length.

Ways to Use the Crochet Row Counter

There are 5 main uses of the Crochet Row Counter, including blankets and scarves.

  • Blankets: Track rows in large projects of 200 or more rows.
  • Scarves: Track rows to reach the target length.
  • Color changes: Mark rows where stripes begin.
  • Matching pieces: Make 2 sleeves or panels with the same row count.
  • Resuming work: Pick up a project weeks later at the right row.
