How the Website Touch Interaction Counter Works

Count touches on a web page or a chosen part of it. Keep track of where a touch happens so you can compare how people use each area.

  1. Add the script: Paste the tracking snippet into your page.
  2. Tag elements: Add a data attribute, such as data-count="buy-button", to each element to track.
  3. Collect interactions: The script counts pointer-down events on tagged elements.
  4. Read the counts: See interaction counts per element, per page and per device type.

Website Touch Interaction Counter Formula

Add the touches in each area to find the total. Divide an area count by that total to get its share.

Interaction rate (%) = Element interactions ÷ Page views × 100
Element interactions
Taps or clicks on the tagged element
Page views
Times the page loaded

Example: A pricing page gets 4,000 views, and the Buy button gets 360 taps. Interaction rate = 9%.

About the Website Touch Interaction Counter

This is a way to tally touch actions on a page. A count can refer to a tap, a target or an event, so define it first.

One gesture can send more than one browser event. Keep the rule for each count clear so the same action is not counted twice by mistake.

Ways to Use the Website Touch Interaction Counter

Use touch counts to test a page layout and compare touch targets. Here are five examples.

  • Button testing: Compare taps on 2 versions of a call-to-action button.
  • Mobile menu checks: Count taps on each menu item.
  • Content engagement: Count taps on tabs, accordions and galleries.
  • Dead-click hunting: Count taps on images users expect to be links.
  • Device comparison: Compare touch and mouse interaction rates.
