How the Multi-Touch Counter Works
The Multi-Touch Counter counts every finger that touches the screen at the same time and adds each contact to the total. The tool reads each finger's unique pointer ID, so 3 fingers landing together add 3, not 1.
- Place several fingers on the screen: Touch the counting surface with 2 to 10 fingers at once. Each contact gets its own pointer ID from the browser.
- Read the live contact number: The display shows how many fingers rest on the glass right now and how many contacts have been counted in total.
- Lift and repeat: Lift all fingers and tap again. Every new contact adds to the running total.
- Check the device limit: Add fingers one at a time until the number stops rising. That number is the multi-touch limit of the screen.
Multi-Touch Counter Formula
The Multi-Touch Counter total equals the sum of new contacts in every touch event. The simultaneous count equals the number of pointer IDs that are down at one moment.
- New contacts per event
- Fingers that start touching in one event
- Active pointer IDs
- Set of fingers on the screen right now

- Number of items in the set
Example: A user taps with 2 fingers, then 5 fingers, then 3 fingers. The total is 2 + 5 + 3 = 10 contacts. The highest simultaneous count is 5.
Multi-Touch Counter Reference Table
The Multi-Touch Counter conversion table lists typical simultaneous touch limits by device type. Values come from what each device reports through the browser's maxTouchPoints property.
| Device type | Typical maxTouchPoints | Fingers supported | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic Android phone | 5 | 1 to 5 | Budget touch controllers |
| Most Android phones | 10 | 1 to 10 | Common flagship and mid-range value |
| iPhone | 5 | 1 to 5 | Value reported to Safari |
| iPad | 5 to 11 | 1 to 11 | Varies by model and browser |
| Windows touch laptop | 10 | 1 to 10 | Windows touch certification minimum is 5 |
| Desktop with mouse | 0 | 0 | No touch hardware |
About the Multi-Touch Counter
A Multi-Touch Counter is a counter that registers several simultaneous screen contacts as separate counts. Capacitive touchscreens track each finger on its own, and the browser exposes each one through the Pointer Events API.
The tool answers 2 questions: how many contacts happened in total, and how many fingers the screen can sense at once. Developers, phone buyers and repair technicians use the second figure to check a touch controller.
Ways to Use the Multi-Touch Counter
The Multi-Touch Counter has 5 key uses, including device limit tests and group tap games.
- Device limit tests: Buyers check whether a used phone or tablet still senses all 10 fingers.
- Screen repair checks: Technicians confirm a replaced digitizer detects every contact across the panel.
- Group tap games: Several players tap one tablet at the same time, and each finger counts.
- App testing: Developers verify that pinch, zoom and multi-finger gestures receive the right number of contacts.
- Classroom demos: Teachers show how capacitive screens sense more than one finger.
