How the Touch End Counter Works
The Touch End Counter adds 1 every time the browser fires a touch-end or pointer-up event, which happens when a finger lifts from the screen.
- Touch and lift: Each lift fires one end event.
- Lift several fingers: Each finger lifted fires its own end event.
- Watch for gaps: The tool compares end events with start events.
- Read missing ends: Starts minus ends minus cancels shows contacts still down or lost.
Touch End Counter Formula
The Touch End Counter total equals the number of touch-end events received. Unmatched contacts equal starts minus ends minus cancels.
- Ends
- Lift events received
- Starts
- Contact-start events
- Cancels
- Cancelled contacts
Example: A session logs 120 starts, 117 ends and 2 cancels. Unmatched = 120 − 117 − 2 = 1 contact still down or lost.
Touch End Counter Reference Table
The Touch End Counter conversion table shows how start, end and cancel totals reveal touch-event health.
| Starts | Ends | Cancels | Unmatched | Status |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 50 | 50 | 0 | 0 | Healthy |
| 50 | 48 | 2 | 0 | Healthy, with cancels |
| 50 | 49 | 0 | 1 | 1 finger still down |
| 50 | 44 | 0 | 6 | Lost end events |
| 0 | 3 | 0 | −3 | Phantom end events |
About the Touch End Counter
A Touch End Counter is a diagnostic tool that tallies contact-end events from the browser. End events mark the moment contact stops.
Most on-screen buttons act on the end event, so a missed end event means a missed action. Counting ends next to starts exposes stuck touches, which leave a control pressed after the finger has lifted.
Ways to Use the Touch End Counter
The Touch End Counter has 5 key uses, including stuck-touch detection and release-action testing.
- Stuck-touch detection: Find contacts that never fire an end event.
- Release-action testing: Confirm buttons receive every pointer-up event.
- Browser comparison: Compare end-event reliability across Chrome, Safari and Firefox.
- Screen edge tests: Check end events when fingers lift near the bezel.
- Drag testing: Confirm drag-and-drop ends fire on release.
