How the Swipe Counter Works

The Swipe Counter adds 1 each time a finger moves at least 50 px across the screen within 500 ms. Short movements and slow drags do not count as swipes.

  1. Place a finger: Touch anywhere on the swipe area.
  2. Flick across the screen: Move the finger at least 50 px (13.2 mm) in one fast stroke.
  3. Lift to finish: The swipe counts on release when distance and speed pass the rules.
  4. Read the stats: See total swipes, average distance and average speed.

Swipe Counter Formula

The Swipe Counter adds 1 when swipe distance is at least the distance limit and swipe velocity is at least the speed limit.

Distance = √(Δx² + Δy²) | Velocity = Distance ÷ Duration | Swipe = (Distance ≥ 50 px) AND (Velocity ≥ 0.1 px/ms)
Δx, Δy
Horizontal and vertical movement
Duration
Time from touch start to touch end
Velocity
Speed in pixels per millisecond

Example: A finger moves 180 px right and 20 px down in 150 ms. Distance = 181.1 px. Velocity = 1.21 px/ms. Both pass, so the count rises by 1.

Swipe Counter Reference Table

The Swipe Counter conversion table converts swipe speed between pixels per millisecond, pixels per second and millimeters per second.

About the Swipe Counter

A Swipe Counter is a gesture counter that tallies fast directional strokes across a touchscreen. The tool separates swipes from taps and slow drags by measuring distance and speed.

Swipe gestures drive scrolling, page turning and dismiss actions. Platform guidelines set a minimum fling velocity, which Android defines as 50 dp per second, to tell a flick apart from a slow scroll.

Ways to Use the Swipe Counter

The Swipe Counter has 5 main uses, including swipe-game practice and screen edge testing.

  • Swipe-game practice: Players count swipes in fruit-slicing and runner games.
  • Screen edge testing: Technicians swipe across all edges to find dead strips.
  • Gesture fatigue tests: Researchers count swipes in long scrolling sessions.
  • Flashcard reviews: Students count cards swiped during study.
  • Hand therapy: Therapists count swipe repetitions for wrist and finger exercises.
