How the Pinch Gesture Counter Works

The Pinch Gesture Counter adds 1 each time 2 fingers move closer together until the distance between them drops by at least 20%. The tool tracks both fingers and compares their start and end distance.

  1. Place 2 fingers apart: Touch the surface with the thumb and index finger spread apart.
  2. Pinch inward: Move the fingers toward each other.
  3. Reach the scale limit: The pinch counts when the gap shrinks to 80% of the starting gap or less.
  4. Lift and repeat: Lift both fingers and pinch again to add the next count.

Pinch Gesture Counter Formula

The Pinch Gesture Counter scale equals the current finger distance divided by the starting finger distance. A pinch counts when the scale falls to 0.8 or lower.

Scale = d_now ÷ d_start | Pinch = Scale ≤ 0.8
d_start
Distance between the 2 fingers at touch start
d_now
Current distance between the fingers
Scale
Zoom factor of the gesture

Example: Fingers start 300 px apart and end 120 px apart. Scale = 120 ÷ 300 = 0.40, which is below 0.8, so the count rises by 1.

Pinch Gesture Counter Reference Table

The Pinch Gesture Counter conversion table converts finger gaps into scale values and zoom percentages. The start gap is 300 px (79.4 mm).

About the Pinch Gesture Counter

A Pinch Gesture Counter is a 2-finger gesture counter that tallies inward pinches. The pinch zooms out of maps, photos and documents.

Pinch detection needs a multi-touch screen with at least 2 touch points. The scale value is the same number that zoom libraries use to set the size of the content.

Ways to Use the Pinch Gesture Counter

The Pinch Gesture Counter has 5 main uses, including zoom gesture testing and hand rehabilitation.

  • Zoom gesture testing: Developers confirm pinch-to-zoom triggers at the right scale.
  • Hand rehabilitation: Therapists count thumb and index pinch reps for grip recovery.
  • Fine motor training: Children practice the pincer grasp on a tablet.
  • Screen checks: Technicians confirm 2-finger tracking across the panel.
  • Usability research: Researchers count how often users zoom out on a page.
