How the Single-Tap Counter Works
The Single-Tap Counter counts a touch as a single tap only when the finger lifts within 300 ms and moves less than 10 px. Touches that last longer or travel further are rejected as long presses or drags.
- Tap briefly: Touch and lift in one quick motion.
- Pass the gesture check: The tool checks duration under 300 ms and movement under 10 px (2.6 mm).
- Wait for the double-tap window: The tool waits 250 ms for a 2nd tap. With no 2nd tap, the gesture counts as a single tap.
- Review rejects: The display shows accepted taps and rejected touches side by side.
Single-Tap Counter Formula
The Single-Tap Counter adds 1 when touch duration is under the time limit, movement is under the distance limit and no 2nd tap follows within the double-tap window.
- Duration
- Time from touch start to touch end
- Distance
- √(Δx² + Δy²) between start and end
- Double-tap window
- Wait time for a 2nd tap
Example: A touch lasts 120 ms, moves 4 px and no 2nd tap follows. All 3 conditions pass, so the count rises by 1.
Single-Tap Counter Reference Table
The Single-Tap Counter conversion table shows how touch duration and movement decide the gesture type.
| Duration | Movement | 2nd tap within 250 ms | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| 80 ms | 3 px (0.8 mm) | No | Single tap |
| 250 ms | 8 px (2.1 mm) | No | Single tap |
| 120 ms | 4 px (1.1 mm) | Yes | Part of double tap |
| 650 ms | 2 px (0.5 mm) | No | Long press |
| 150 ms | 60 px (15.9 mm) | No | Swipe |
| 350 ms | 5 px (1.3 mm) | No | Slow tap (rejected) |
About the Single-Tap Counter
A Single-Tap Counter is a gesture counter that tallies only clean, isolated taps. Gesture rules filter out drags, presses and double taps.
Mobile operating systems use similar thresholds. Android sets a touch slop of about 8 dp and a double-tap timeout of 300 ms. The Single-Tap Counter applies matching rules in the browser.
Ways to Use the Single-Tap Counter
There are 5 main uses of the Single-Tap Counter, including gesture tests and accessibility checks.
- Gesture tests: Developers confirm an app separates single taps from double taps.
- Accessibility checks: Testers see how often a user's taps fall outside the single-tap rules.
- Tremor assessment: Clinicians count how many taps move more than 10 px.
- Clean-input counting: Users count only deliberate taps and ignore brushes.
- Teaching gestures: Instructors show the time and distance limits behind a tap.
