How the Pass and Fail Counter Works

The Pass and Fail Counter records each inspection outcome with a Pass button or a Fail button and reports the first-pass yield.

  1. Inspect a unit: Check the unit against the standard.
  2. Tap the outcome: Tap Pass or Fail. An optional Rework button records units sent back.
  3. Watch the yield: The tool updates pass rate after every unit.
  4. Save the batch: Store the batch number, inspector and results.

Pass and Fail Counter Formula

The Pass and Fail Counter first-pass yield (FPY) equals units passed on the first inspection divided by total units inspected, multiplied by 100.

FPY (%) = Passed ÷ (Passed + Failed) × 100 | Fail rate (%) = 100 − FPY
Passed
Units passing the first time
Failed
Units failing inspection

Example: A batch has 470 passes and 30 fails. FPY = 470 ÷ 500 × 100 = 94%. Fail rate = 6%.

About the Pass and Fail Counter

A Pass and Fail Counter is a 2-button inspection tally that records whether each unit meets the standard. The result is a yield figure for the batch.

First-pass yield counts only units that pass the first time, without rework. The metric shows how well a process performs before any fixes.

Ways to Use the Pass and Fail Counter

There are 5 main uses of the Pass and Fail Counter, including batch inspection and exam marking.

  • Batch inspection: Inspectors record pass and fail results for each batch.
  • Exam marking: Teachers tally pass and fail results in a class.
  • Software testing: Testers count passing and failing manual test cases.
  • Seed germination: Growers count seeds that sprout and seeds that fail.
  • Equipment checks: Safety staff count devices passing an inspection.
