How the Stock Movement Counter Works

The Stock Movement Counter records every addition and removal of stock as separate In and Out tallies and keeps a running stock balance.

  1. Set the opening stock: Enter the quantity on hand at the start of the period.
  2. Tap In for receipts: Record goods received, returns and transfers in.
  3. Tap Out for issues: Record sales, issues, waste and transfers out.
  4. Read the balance: The tool shows opening stock, total in, total out and closing stock.

Stock Movement Counter Formula

The Stock Movement Counter closing stock equals opening stock plus stock in minus stock out. Inventory turnover equals units out divided by average stock.

Closing = Opening + In − Out | Turnover = Out ÷ ((Opening + Closing) ÷ 2)
Opening

In

Out

Example: Opening = 150, In = 400, Out = 430. Closing = 150 + 400 − 430 = 120. Turnover = 430 ÷ 135 = 3.2 times.

About the Stock Movement Counter

A Stock Movement Counter is a ledger-style counter that logs units entering and leaving stock. The running balance always equals opening stock plus inflows minus outflows.

Accountants call this the inventory equation. Logging movements, not just balances, shows when stock left and helps trace losses to a specific day or shift.

Ways to Use the Stock Movement Counter

The Stock Movement Counter has 5 main uses, including stockroom logs and kitchen waste.

  • Stockroom logs: Staff log items moved from the stockroom to the shop floor.
  • Kitchen waste: Chefs log wasted portions as Out movements.
  • Consignment stock: Suppliers track units placed and units sold.
  • Tool cribs: Workshops log tools issued and returned.
  • Reorder timing: Buyers see daily usage to set reorder points.
