How the Missed Target Counter Works

The Missed Target Counter adds 1 every time a touch lands outside every designated target on the screen. Touches inside a target count as hits, and the tool reports the miss rate.

  1. Show the targets: Place 1 or more targets of a set size on the surface.
  2. Tap the targets: Try to hit a target on every tap.
  3. Count misses: Every touch outside all targets adds 1 to the miss count.
  4. Compare hits and misses: Read the hit count, miss count and miss rate.

Missed Target Counter Formula

The Missed Target Counter miss rate equals misses divided by total touches, multiplied by 100. A touch is a miss when its distance from every target center is larger than the target radius.

Miss = Distance > Radius for all targets | Miss rate (%) = Misses ÷ (Hits + Misses) × 100
Distance
Touch distance from a target center
Radius
Half of the target width
Hits, Misses
Touches inside and outside targets

Example: A user makes 80 touches with 6 misses. Miss rate = 6 ÷ 80 × 100 = 7.5%.

About the Missed Target Counter

A Missed Target Counter is a tool that tallies touches landing outside intended targets. The miss count measures how hard a layout is to use.

Miss rate falls quickly as targets grow. Moving from a 24 px target to a 48 px target cuts the miss rate by roughly 5 times for most adults, a pattern Fitts's law predicts.

Ways to Use the Missed Target Counter

There are 5 main uses of the Missed Target Counter, including layout testing and accessibility audits.

  • Layout testing: Designers count misses on dense menus and toolbars.
  • Accessibility audits: Auditors confirm targets meet WCAG 2.2 size rules.
  • Motor skill drills: Users track falling miss counts with practice.
  • Device comparison: Testers compare misses on small and large phones.
  • Glove testing: Workers measure misses while wearing work gloves.
