How the Increment and Decrement Counter Works

The Increment and Decrement Counter adds 1 with the plus control and subtracts 1 with the minus control, so one total tracks items coming in and going out. The total never drops below the floor you set, which is 0 by default.

  1. Tap plus to add: Tap the + button or the main surface to raise the total by the step value.
  2. Tap minus to subtract: Tap the − button to lower the total by the same step value.
  3. Use keyboard shortcuts: Press the Up arrow or + key to add, and the Down arrow or − key to subtract, on a computer.
  4. Read the net total: The display shows the current balance after every addition and subtraction.

Increment and Decrement Counter Formula

The Increment and Decrement Counter total equals the starting value plus all increments minus all decrements, limited by the floor value.

Total = max(Floor, Start + (Inc × Step) − (Dec × Step))
Start
Value at the beginning, usually 0
Inc
Number of plus taps
Dec
Number of minus taps
Step
Amount per tap
Floor
Lowest allowed total, usually 0

Example: A room starts with 12 people. The counter records 30 plus taps and 18 minus taps at a step of 1. The total is 12 + 30 − 18 = 24 people.

Increment and Decrement Counter Reference Table

The Increment and Decrement Counter conversion table shows the net total for common in-and-out patterns. Each row starts at 0 with a step of 1.

About the Increment and Decrement Counter

An Increment and Decrement Counter is a two-way counter that both adds and subtracts from one running total. A one-way tally only rises, while this counter tracks a balance.

The counter matches the up/down counter used in digital electronics, where one input raises the stored number and another lowers it. On a touchscreen, the 2 inputs are 2 buttons.

Ways to Use the Increment and Decrement Counter

There are 5 main uses of the Increment and Decrement Counter, including room occupancy and score keeping.

  • Room occupancy: Door staff add 1 for each arrival and subtract 1 for each departure.
  • Score keeping: Referees add points for goals and remove points for penalties.
  • Stock on hand: Store staff add received items and subtract sold items.
  • Board game resources: Players track life points, coins or tokens that go up and down.
  • Parking spaces: Attendants count cars in and out of a car park.
