How the Survey Response Counter Works

The Survey Response Counter tallies spoken or paper survey answers by category, one question at a time, with one button per answer option. Each question keeps its own set of counts.

  1. Add the questions: Enter each question and its answer options, such as a 1 to 5 scale.
  2. Ask or read each answer: Interview a person or read a paper form.
  3. Tap the answer: Tap the option given for each question.
  4. Review results: See counts, percentages and the mean score for each question.

Survey Response Counter Formula

The Survey Response Counter mean score equals the sum of each scale value multiplied by its count, divided by the number of responses.

Mean = Σ (Value × Count) ÷ Σ Count
Value
Scale point, such as 1 to 5
Count
Responses at that scale point

Example: A 1 to 5 question gets 2, 5, 10, 18 and 15 responses. Mean = (2 + 10 + 30 + 72 + 75) ÷ 50 = 189 ÷ 50 = 3.78.

Survey Response Counter Reference Table

The Survey Response Counter conversion table shows the margin of error at 95% confidence for different sample sizes. The values assume a 50% response share and a large population.

About the Survey Response Counter

A Survey Response Counter is a tally tool for recording survey answers category by category. The tool speeds up face-to-face surveys and paper form data entry.

Sample size sets survey precision. The margin of error at 95% confidence equals 1.96 × √(0.25 ÷ n), so 400 responses give about ±4.9%, and quadrupling responses halves the margin.

Ways to Use the Survey Response Counter

There are 5 main uses of the Survey Response Counter, including street interviews and paper form entry.

  • Street interviews: Researchers tap answers while interviewing passers-by.
  • Paper form entry: Staff tally answers from a stack of forms.
  • Event feedback: Organizers count smiley-face ratings at the exit.
  • Student projects: Students survey classmates for statistics coursework.
  • Customer service: Staff record satisfaction scores at the counter.
