How the Counter Chart Generator Works

The Counter Chart Generator turns saved counter totals and logs into charts, such as bar charts for categories and line charts for totals over time. You pick the data and the chart type, and the chart draws instantly.

  1. Pick the data: Select counters, sessions or a date range.
  2. Choose the chart type: Pick bar, line, pie or stacked bar.
  3. Set the time bucket: Group time-based data by minute, hour, day or week.
  4. Export the chart: Download the chart as a PNG image or SVG file.

Counter Chart Generator Formula

The Counter Chart Generator bucket value equals the sum of counts whose timestamps fall inside each time bucket. A moving average smooths short spikes.

Bucket(k) = Σ counts with t in [k × Size, (k + 1) × Size) | Moving average(k) = (Bucket(k) + … + Bucket(k − n + 1)) ÷ n
Size
Bucket length, such as 15 minutes
n
Number of buckets in the moving average

Example: Hourly buckets of 40, 55 and 70 give a 3-hour moving average of (40 + 55 + 70) ÷ 3 = 55.

About the Counter Chart Generator

A Counter Chart Generator is a visualization tool that turns counter data into charts. Charts show patterns, peaks and trends that a table of numbers hides.

Data visualization guides recommend bar charts for comparisons and line charts for time trends. Pie charts work only for a few parts that sum to a whole, so the tool suggests a bar chart above 5 categories.

Ways to Use the Counter Chart Generator

There are 5 main uses of the Counter Chart Generator, including peak-hour charts and progress reports.

  • Peak-hour charts: Show visitor counts by hour.
  • Progress reports: Show cumulative output against a target line.
