How the Touch Sensor Calibration Tool Works
The Touch Sensor Calibration Tool measures a sensor's untouched baseline and touched readings, then sets the detection threshold between them on supported boards. A well-placed threshold counts real touches and ignores noise.
- Record the baseline: Keep hands away for 5 seconds while the tool samples untouched readings.
- Record touched readings: Touch the pad 10 times as you would in normal use.
- Calculate the threshold: The tool places the threshold between the noise ceiling and the lowest touch reading.
- Write the setting: Send the threshold to boards that accept settings, or copy it into your sketch.
Touch Sensor Calibration Tool Formula
The Touch Sensor Calibration Tool threshold equals the baseline mean plus a share of the gap between the baseline and the average touch reading. The signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) shows how reliable the setting is.
- μ_base
- Mean untouched reading
- σ_base
- Standard deviation of untouched readings (noise)
- μ_touch
- Mean touched reading
- k
- Placement factor, usually 0.4 to 0.6
Example: Baseline mean = 200, noise σ = 4, touched mean = 320. With k = 0.5, threshold = 200 + 0.5 × 120 = 260. SNR = 120 ÷ 4 = 30.
Touch Sensor Calibration Tool Reference Table
The Touch Sensor Calibration Tool conversion table rates sensor setups by signal-to-noise ratio.
| SNR | Rating | Expected behavior | Action |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under 5 | Poor | Frequent false or missed touches | Thinner cover, larger pad, shorter wires |
| 5 to 10 | Marginal | Occasional errors | Raise filtering or pad size |
| 10 to 20 | Good | Reliable in normal conditions | Use as is |
| Over 20 | Excellent | Reliable in noisy conditions | Use as is |
About the Touch Sensor Calibration Tool
A Touch Sensor Calibration Tool is a setup utility that finds the right detection threshold for a capacitive or similar touch sensor.
Sensor readings drift with humidity, temperature and cover material. Chip makers recommend an SNR of at least 5:1, and higher values give a wider safety margin between noise and a real touch.
Ways to Use the Touch Sensor Calibration Tool
There are 5 main uses of the Touch Sensor Calibration Tool, including first-time setup and cover changes.
- First-time setup: Makers set thresholds for a new sensor build.
- Cover changes: Engineers recalibrate after adding glass or acrylic.
- Glove use: Teams tune sensors for gloved fingers.
- Seasonal drift: Installers recalibrate exhibits in humid or dry seasons.
- Production checks: Factories confirm each unit meets a minimum SNR.
