How the Touch Interval Tracker Works

The Touch Interval Tracker measures the time between each pair of taps in milliseconds and lists every interval in order. The tool stores a timestamp for each tap and subtracts the previous timestamp from the current one.

  1. Tap the surface: The first tap sets the start point. Every later tap creates one interval.
  2. Read each interval: The list shows intervals such as 312 ms, 298 ms and 305 ms.
  3. Check the summary: See the shortest, longest and average interval.
  4. Spot long gaps: Intervals over 2 times the average are highlighted as pauses.

Touch Interval Tracker Formula

The Touch Interval Tracker interval equals the current tap timestamp minus the previous tap timestamp. The average interval equals total time divided by the number of intervals.

Interval(i) = t(i) − t(i−1) | Average = (t_last − t_first) ÷ (N − 1)
t(i)
Timestamp of tap i in milliseconds
N
Number of taps

Example: Taps at 0 ms, 410 ms, 790 ms and 1,230 ms give intervals of 410, 380 and 440 ms. Average = 1,230 ÷ 3 = 410 ms.

About the Touch Interval Tracker

A Touch Interval Tracker is a timing tool that records the gap between consecutive taps. The tool measures timing, not totals.

Interval data is the raw material of rhythm analysis. Researchers call the gap the inter-tap interval (ITI), and the spread of ITI values shows how steady a person's timing is.

Ways to Use the Touch Interval Tracker

The Touch Interval Tracker has 5 key uses, including reaction drills and input lag checks.

  • Reaction drills: Measure the gap between a cue and the next tap.
  • Input lag checks: Compare tap intervals on different screens.
  • Motor research: Record inter-tap intervals for timing studies.
  • Pause detection: Find hesitations in a repeated task.
  • Contraction timing: Tap at each event to log the minutes between them.
