How the Sensor Debounce Tester Works

The Sensor Debounce Tester counts how many raw signals a sensor or switch produces for each single physical activation, and finds the debounce time that reduces them to 1.

  1. Connect the sensor or switch: Stream raw state changes with timestamps from the board.
  2. Press once at a time: Make 20 single, separate presses.
  3. Count signals per press: The tool groups changes that occur close together and counts them.
  4. Read the bounce time: The tool reports the longest bounce and suggests a debounce window.

Sensor Debounce Tester Formula

The Sensor Debounce Tester bounce time equals the time from the first state change to the last state change in one press. The suggested debounce window equals the longest bounce time plus a safety margin.

Bounce = t_last change − t_first change | Debounce window = max(Bounce) × 1.5
t_first change, t_last change
First and last state changes in one press
1.5
Safety margin factor

Example: Across 20 presses, the longest bounce is 3.2 ms. Debounce window = 3.2 × 1.5 = 4.8 ms, rounded up to 5 ms.

About the Sensor Debounce Tester

A Sensor Debounce Tester is a diagnostic tool that measures switch bounce, the burst of extra signals a contact produces when it closes or opens.

Metal contacts bounce for a few milliseconds before settling, and a microcontroller reading every 1 µs sees each bounce as a separate press. Measuring the real bounce time lets you set a debounce window that is long enough without slowing response.

Ways to Use the Sensor Debounce Tester

The Sensor Debounce Tester has 5 main uses, including button selection and firmware tuning.

  • Button selection: Engineers compare bounce between switch models.
  • Firmware tuning: Developers set the shortest safe debounce time.
  • Fault finding: Technicians find worn buttons that double count.
  • Teaching electronics: Students see bounce in real data.
  • Counter accuracy: Makers confirm 1 press equals 1 count.
